1. 0:15Murder had come to the old house on the street called Rue Morgue.
2. 0:23Murder had come and gone and left behind the bodies of an old woman and her daughter.
3. 0:30It was a perplexing crime scene.
4. 0:35The damage to the daughter's body suggested a killer of superhuman strength.
5. 0:42The knife that had killed the old woman, almost separating head from body, was in the room.
6. 0:51But the old woman's body was outside, behind the house.
7. 0:57The door Door and windows to the house all firmly closed, locked on the inside.
8. 1:06Voices had been heard.
9. 1:08One voice was speaking in French.
10. 1:11The other voice had not spoken even one word that anyone could understand.
11. 1:18And yet, there was no one in the room when police arrived moments after the attack.
12. 1:28My friend Dupin was now explaining to me what he had learned when we visited the scene of the crime.
13. 1:38I knew that what seemed impossible must be proved possible.
14. 1:43The killer, and I believe there was just one, escaped through one of these windows.
15. 1:51After the murderer had left, he could have closed the window from the outside,
16. 1:56but he could not have fastened the nail.
17. 2:00Yet anyone could see the nails which held the windows tightly closed.
18. 2:06This was the fact that stopped the police.
19. 2:09How could the murderer put the nail back in its place?
20. 2:14That's the problem, Dupin.
21. 2:17Perhaps, perhaps if you pulled out the nail?
22. 2:21Yes, that is just what I thought.
23. 2:24Two things seemed clear.
24. 2:27First, there had to be something wrong with the idea that the nails were holding the windows closed.
25. 2:33Second, if it was not the nails which were holding the windows closed,
26. 2:39then something else was holding them closed, something hard to see, something hidden.
27. 2:45So I checked the first window again.
28. 2:49I removed the nail.
29. 2:51Then I again tried to raise the window.
30. 2:55It was still firmly closed.
31. 2:57closed. There had to be a hidden lock, I thought, inside the window.
32. 3:04I searched the window frame.
33. 3:07Indeed, I found a button which, when I pressed it, opened an inner lock.
34. 3:13I raised the window with ease.
35. 3:16Now I knew that the killer could close the window from outside and the window would lock itself.
36. 3:24But there was still the nail.
37. 3:26So I returned the nail, pressed the button, and again tried to raise the window.
38. 3:34The nail held the window closed.
39. 3:38Then, the window could not have been the means of escape.
40. 3:42That window, no.
41. 3:44The killer did not escape through it, but I went again to the other window.
42. 3:50The nail there looked the same as the one I had just seen.
43. 3:55I moved the bed so that I could look closely.
44. 3:59Yes, there was a button here, too.
45. 4:02I was so sure I was right that without touching the nail, I pressed the button and tried to raise the window.
46. 4:11And guess what happened?
47. 4:13I knew the answer, but I let Dupin have the satisfaction of reporting.
48. 4:21The window went up, he told me.
49. 4:25As the window went up, it carried with it the top part of the nail, the head.
50. 4:31When I closed the window, the head of the nail was again in its place.
51. 4:37It looked just as it had looked before.
52. 4:39floor. The nail was broken, but looked whole, and what is impossible is proved otherwise.
53. 4:50So the murderer went out that window.
54. 4:54Did he arrive in the room by that path as well?
55. 4:58Dupin answered, although it seemed he was speaking more to himself than to me.
56. 5:04It was a hot summer night.
57. 5:08Would the victim have opened the window to get some fresh night air?
58. 5:13Most likely. So the killer found it open and entered, I said.
59. 5:20Dupin nodded. And as he came in, the window locked when it closed.
60. 5:26The lock held the window closed, just not the nail as it appeared to investigators.
61. 5:32Again, that which seemed impossible was actually possible.
62. 5:38Dupan's eyes were shining with the satisfaction Discovery brings.
63. 5:45He was analyzing evidence, and his unusual reasoning ability had found a great purpose.
64. 5:53I suddenly understood.
65. 5:56This This is why going to the house on the Rue Morgue seemed pleasing to Dupin.
66. 6:02The use of his sharp mental abilities made him happy,
67. 6:07and I had more work to provide that great brain.
68. 6:13Dupin, the windows are on the fourth floor, far above the ground,
69. 6:20even an open window.
70. 6:23DuPont shook his head up and down slowly.
71. 6:27Yes, yes, that is an interesting question.
72. 6:32How did the murderer go from the window down to the ground and vice versa?
73. 6:38But I had looked around carefully outside, you recall, and I knew away.
74. 6:45And the answer to this question told me still more about the identity of the killer.
75. 6:50Do you remember, friend, the lightning rod attached to the house?
76. 6:57Yes, yes.
77. 6:59A metal pole and quite narrow.
78. 7:02It protects the building from lightning strikes.
79. 7:06But it is so tall and thin.
80. 7:10True. It would take great strength and agility to get up the pole.
81. 7:15Some kinds of animals might climb it easily, yes?
82. 7:21But surely not every man could.
83. 7:24In fact, maybe very few men.
84. 7:28Those of very special strength and special training.
85. 7:33This helped create a better picture of the murderer, but still not sharp enough to recognize.
86. 7:40I still had the question, who?
87. 7:44We know the killer climbed the pole, entered the room through the window,
88. 7:49murdered and destroyed all order in the room.
89. 7:54He managed to push one body up the chimney.
90. 7:58He threw the other, almost headless, out the window.
91. 8:04Then he left the way he came.
92. 8:07We can answer the how of the crime, but who?
93. 8:11Such unspeakable viciousness.
94. 8:15What human could do this to another?
95. 8:18Dupin continued, trance-like again, seeming to speak to himself as much as to me.
96. 8:27Perhaps we can come closer to answering the question of who by exploring the question of why.
97. 8:36But Dupin, the police said the motive must have been robbery.
98. 8:43But, my friend, what was taken?
99. 8:46The police said they could not answer the question.
100. 8:50They said they did not know what the women had.
101. 8:54Maybe clothes and jewelry, the investigators proposed.
102. 8:57But neighbors describe the women as nearly hermits, rarely if ever leaving the house.
103. 9:07Of what use would fine clothes and costly jewelry be to them?
104. 9:14To Pan's eyes were glistening, his brows pointing sharply down, as he circled me, thinking aloud.
105. 9:23But what is more telling than what the killer might have taken is what he left behind,
106. 9:30conveniently in bags in the center of the room.
107. 9:34Of course, the money.
108. 9:36You are right, Dupin.
109. 9:38It makes no sense.
110. 9:40All the money delivered from the bank to the old woman, right there on the floor?
111. 9:47Why would the attacker have passed on the riches?
112. 9:50is, a thief certainly would not.
113. 9:54So I want you to forget the investigators claim that the killer acted out of a desire for money.
114. 10:02They thought this only because they knew the money had arrived just three days before the killings,
115. 10:09but that was just chance.
116. 10:12If gold was the reason for the murders, the killer must have been quite a fool to forget and leave it there.
117. 10:18No, I think that there was no reason for these killings except, perhaps, fear.
118. 10:27The wild nature of the attack leads me to a motive of fear.
119. 10:33An interesting theory, Dupin.
120. 10:36Fear can bring out the crazed beast in a person.
121. 10:40In any living thing.
122. 10:43Now let us look at the murders themselves.
123. 10:46A girl is killed by powerful hands around her neck,
124. 10:51then the body is placed in the opening over the fireplace, head down,
125. 10:57unusual, even by the standards of the most terrible criminals.
126. 11:02Think also of the great strength needed to put the body where it was found.
127. 11:08wound. It took several men to pull it out.
128. 11:12Also, the hair pulled from the head of the old woman.
129. 11:16You saw it on the floor yourself, and you saw the blood and skin still attached.
130. 11:23It takes great force to pull out even twenty or thirty hairs at a time,
131. 11:29but this was hair and scalp.
132. 11:33And there was no reason to almost take off the woman's head just to kill her.
133. 11:41It is extremely odd, I agree,
134. 11:45especially since there is no evidence that the killer knew the victims.
135. 11:51No one could hate a stranger enough to carry out such torture depends eyes narrowed exactly
