0:00 The state of Minnesota is known as the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes. 0:08 Our national park this week protects four major ones. 0:15 The National Park Service says water is the foundation of this wild and remote place. 0:24 Welcome to Voyagers National Park. 0:30 You must have a strong desire to see voyagers to make the visit. 0:38 It is not an easy place to get to. 0:42 Much of the park is accessible only by boat. 0:46 The voyagers for whom the park was named understood this well. 0:56 Voyager is a French word meaning traveler. 1:01 In the 1700s, French Canadian fur traders started coming 1:08 to the area seeking beaver fur and other animal coats. 1:15 The product was in great demand in Europe. 1:20 The fur traders traveled to and from the area for business. 1:26 They took canoes to get around. 1:31 The boat trips were often long and hard. 1:35 The waters and wild animals created great dangers. 1:43 Voyager life became legendary. 1:46 The men were seen as brave adventurers, but they were also romantics. 1:54 They became known for singing songs as they navigated the waterways. 2:02 Of course, the Voyagers were not the first people people in the area that is now Voyager's National Park. 2:11 People first arrived there about 10 ,000 years ago. 2:17 They were mostly nomadic and did not settle permanently. 2:24 In the last 1 ,000 years, Native American tribes settled in the area, 2:32 including the Cree, Monsoni, and Essiniboine. 2:38 The Ojibwa were the residents of more modern times. 2:43 They served as guides to the fur traders. 2:47 They also provided canoes and other important items. 2:54 Voyager's National Park covers almost 88 ,500 hectares. 3:03 About About half of that surface is water. 3:08 Creating the park was a long and difficult process. 3:13 Minnesota state lawmakers first proposed the idea in 1891. 3:22 But it was 80 years before Congress established the park. 3:27 President Richard Nixon signed the bill that finally established voyagers 3:34 as a national park in 1971. 3:41 The park protects four major Minnesotan lakes. 3:48 Rainy Lake, Cabotogama, 3:51 Namakan, and Sand Point. 3:54 Rainy is the biggest. 3:58 It covers about 930 square kilometers. 4:05 It is a popular fishing lake. 4:09 Fishers may catch walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. 4:17 In the winter, thick ice covers Rainy Lake. 4:21 Visitors can walk and drive on it. 4:27 Rainy Lake meets with Namekin and Kabatogama Lakes at Kettle Falls. 4:34 A dam was built on the Falls in the early 20th century. 4:41 Along with it came the Kettle Falls Hotel. 4:46 It housed traders, loggers, and visitors searching for gold in the area. 4:55 The hotel fell into disuse in more modern times, 4:59 but in 1987 the National Park Service made repairs and improvements 5:08 to the building. 5:10 It is the only indoor place to stay in the area. 5:16 Nature and art meet at the Ellsworth Rock Gardens in Voyagers National Park. 5:25 Park officials describe the gardens as the showplace of Lake Cabotogama. 5:34 A carpenter and artist from Chicago named Jack Ellsworth built a summer home 5:42 on the lake in the 1940s. 5:46 He then designed, built, and cared for the rock gardens over 20 years. 5:55 The artist also created garden sculptures from native stone. 6:01 There were once about 200 rock sculptures. 6:08 Ellsworth stopped caring for the gardens in his older age. 6:14 When the National Park Service took control of the land, the gardens needed repair and restoration. 6:24 Today, it is an interesting place to visit within the park. 6:30 Voyagers National Park may be best seen at night. 6:37 Officials there like to say that half of the park comes out after dark. 6:45 Certainly much of its magic does. 6:50 The most spectacular light display on earth is sometimes visible at voyagers. 6:58 The aurora borealis, or northern lights, appear periodically in the night sky, 7:07 as streaks or clouds of light. 7:12 The lights are most often white or soft green. 7:18 However, they sometimes deepen into colors like yellow, red, blue, 7:26 and even purple. 7:29 The northern lights are not always immediately recognizable, but keep watching. 7:38 If the light you see comes and goes, or intensifies over time, 7:44 you may be witnessing the aurora borealis. 7:50 Along with the northern lights, voyagers is a great place to see meteors. 7:59 These bursts of light cross the area's black skies mostly 8:05 in August during the Perseids meteor shower. 8:10 Meteors, often called shooting stars, 8:15 form when pieces of ice and dust cross into Earth's atmosphere and begin 8:23 to burn brightly. 8:26 The display of natural fireworks is a great way to finish the day at Voyager's National Park. 8:35 You can fall asleep under the stars and be sure 8:40 that more extraordinary nature awaits you when day breaks in Voyager's National Park. 8:50 I'm Katie Weaver. 8:51 And I'm Ashley Thompson.
