0:01 And 0:09 now, words and their stories from VOA Learning English. 0:19 In American English, we use many expressions to describe when two people have a lot of similarities, 0:28 or are very close. 0:31 Here are some examples. 0:33 individuals. If we say two people are joined at the hip, they are nearly always together. 0:41 If we describe individuals as thick as thieves, it means they are very close. 0:50 People considered two peas in a pod have many things in common. 0:55 And we use the term kindred spirits to describe people who often share the same opinions and interests. 1:06 These expressions can represent people who grew closer for different reasons. 1:13 Maybe they complemented each other well in certain ways. 1:18 Or maybe their situations brought them together for the purpose of completing something important or meaningful. 1:28 But today we are going to discuss a very special kind of relationship, 1:34 one that involves two people who are romantically involved and very successful. 1:43 People in such relationships can be described as power couples. 1:49 There are many examples of famous power couples, 1:55 including successful movie stars, musicians, and others in the performing arts. 2:03 But power couples can exist in many other industries and communities as well. 2:10 And the two people do not have to work in the same industry. 2:16 If they do, however, that can make them even more powerful. 2:22 For example, a well-known architect who builds homes could be partnered with a famous designer who decorates them. 2:32 Or one person in a power couple may be a music producer, while the other is a famous singer. 2:42 Even though power couples involve highly successful people, 2:47 one person could describe their partner as their better half. 2:53 This is a way to complement their other half in the relationship. 2:59 For example, one might say during a meeting with a friend, Hello, how are you? 3:04 And more importantly, how is your better half? 3:08 Now, let's hear two friends use some of these expressions. 3:14 Oh, hey. I'm not used to seeing you alone. 3:18 Where's your sidekick? 3:20 Huh? Who are you talking about? 3:24 Ben, you guys have been joined at the hip for weeks. 3:28 Looks like you're thick as thieves. 3:30 Well, the project is pretty important for the company. 3:35 So we're putting in a lot of hours. 3:38 Are you becoming kindred spirits from working so much together? 3:42 No. It's just keeping us both very busy. 3:47 Busy trying to become the new power couple in the office? 3:51 What are you talking about? 3:53 We're not thick as thieves or kindred spirits. 3:58 and we're definitely not a power couple. 4:03 We are just working hard on the same project. 4:09 And that's all the time we have for this Words and Their Stories. 4:13 Until next time, I'm Anna Matteo.
