0:01 And 0:09 now, words and their stories from VOA Learning English. 0:19 In life, some of our decisions and actions are well thought out. 0:26 They involve research, examination, 0:30 and time for thought. 0:33 And other decisions and actions are not well thought out. 0:38 We make them quickly without thinking, almost like a pure physical reaction. 0:48 We can call these decisions, actions, or reactions knee-jerk. 0:55 This term comes from a medical process. 0:57 Merriam-Webster defines the noun knee-jerk 1:02 as an involuntary forward kick produced by a light blow 1:09 on the tendon below the kneecap. 1:13 It is an involuntary action. 1:16 It's automatic. 1:19 The words involuntary and automatic are important when understanding the term knee-jerk. 1:26 and when to use it. 1:30 Knee-jerk reactions seem to happen automatically without a decision-making process. 1:39 We often use knee-jerk as an adjective. 1:44 Like hitting your knee cap to move your leg, 1:48 knee-jerk reactions or statements also seem like an involuntary reflex. 1:56 knee-jerk also describes predictable behavior. 2:02 Again, hit the knee and the leg will kick every time. 2:08 So knee-jerk describes someone who always reacts quickly and without enough thought. 2:17 For example, let's say you are on a team with someone who never faces responsibility for their mistakes 2:25 in the game. 2:27 If brought to account, the player always blames the dropped ball on other teammates. 2:35 You can say that player is having a knee-jerk reaction to criticism. 2:41 They have a go-to response. 2:44 It's like a reflex they can't control. 2:48 We often use knee-jerk in a criticizing or negative way. 2:56 Now, a gut reaction also happens without thinking, 3:01 but it is a bit different than a knee-jerk response. 3:07 A gut reaction is a feeling. 3:11 When we have a gut reaction, our instincts are telling us that something may not be right. 3:19 Gut reactions are instinctual warnings. 3:24 So, we use this expression a bit differently than knee-jerk. 3:30 We usually talk about our own gut reactions or impulses, not others. 3:39 Here is an example. 3:41 One day, I was hiking on a mountain in California. 3:45 I had hiked for about two hours, and was near the top. 3:51 The view, I was told, was truly beautiful. 3:55 I couldn't wait to see it. 3:58 Then, suddenly, I had a strange feeling. 4:03 Something just didn't feel right. 4:05 I can't explain why, But my gut instinct was to turn around and head back down the mountain. 4:14 I later found out that a dangerous bear had been sighted in the same area that I had fled. 4:22 I am so thankful I listened to my gut instinct. 4:27 And that's words and their stories. 4:30 Until next time, I'm Anna Matteo.
