0:08 And now, words and their stories from VOA Learning English. 0:19 During a new year, many of us decide to try something new. 0:25 With a new year's resolution, we resolve to do something we have not done in the past. 0:32 Sometimes these things are risk-free, 0:36 like eating healthier food or getting more exercise. 0:42 Sometimes we decide to learn a new skill, like a language or a musical instrument. 0:50 Again, these things are not risky, nor do they have bad consequences. 0:56 consequences. If you do not learn how to play the guitar, nothing bad will happen, probably. 1:06 However, sometimes we need to shake up our lives and do something different that does have consequences. 1:16 That means there are risks if things do not work out. 1:22 Such a change could involve moving to a new city, starting a new job, or ending a relationship. 1:32 These new things do have a level of risk. 1:36 Things could go wrong. 1:39 On the other hand, things could go very right. 1:43 So, for these situations, we introduce two expressions that encourage you to take a chance. 1:52 The first expression is, nothing ventured, nothing gained. 1:58 This means that without doing something risky or difficult, a bad situation will not improve. 2:07 You could also sum it up this way. 2:10 If you try something risky, you could fail. 2:15 But if you do not try at all, you will surely fail. 2:21 The word venture can be both a noun and a verb. 2:26 As a verb, it means to proceed in a dangerous or risky plan. 2:31 As a noun, it means an action that involves chance, risk, or danger. 2:38 For example, starting a new restaurant is a risky business venture these days. 2:46 And venturing into an unknown area could be dangerous. 2:51 A friend of mine wanted to learn how to drive a stunt car, and then move to Los Angeles to become a stunt car driver. 3:01 A stunt car is a vehicle used in the movies to perform crashes and wild driving. 3:09 There are not many women in this profession. 3:13 So I told her that her decision involved lots of risk. 3:18 She said to me, Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. 3:24 Our second expression is, Fortune favors the bold. 3:31 Fortune usually means wealth or fame, but it can also mean being in a good situation. 3:39 And if you are bold, you are brave. 3:43 So this expression means that people who are brave and take chances help themselves. 3:51 They're bold, brave actions put them in a good place. 3:57 When using this expression, keep this in mind. 4:01 The person who finds a fortune has done something to get it. 4:05 It just doesn't happen to them by chance. 4:09 So if someone happens to win a lot of money in a lottery, 4:15 you wouldn't use the expression Then, fortune favors the bold. 4:20 However, let's say you quit your job and move to a new city. 4:25 That is a bold decision, 4:28 but you are sure that it will be good for you. 4:32 In the new city, you find your dream job. 4:36 It might even pay more money than your old job. 4:40 Here you could definitely say, fortune favors the bold. 4:46 And that's all the time we have for this words and their stories. 4:51 For the start of 2023, I wish you and yours health and wealth. 4:57 Until next time, I'm Anna Matteo.
