0:00 I wanna show you how two little words in English can help explain complicated situations without complicated details. 0:09 Those two words are the words for now. 0:12 Let me show you what I mean with two quick sentences. I could say, I live in Madrid, or I live in Madrid for now. 0:20 That first sentence is a simple fact. 0:24 The second sentence tells us a little more. It says that, yes, Madrid is my current situation. This is a fact right now, but don't assume that it's permanent. In this lesson today, 0:35 we're going to really understand the power of these two words and how much flexibility they give us in a situation, especially when we don't want to, 0:45 or we shouldn't share all the complicated details, and we're going to look at other phrases that are very similar. 0:54 But before we go there, I want to examine a little more closely just what these two words are doing it. So let me give you another example. 1:03 This time I want you to imagine you're in a team meeting trying to solve a problem. Someone offers a solution and your supervisor says, 1:12 this will work, or this will work for now. Again, these two words are doing something important. That first sentence, 1:22 this will work, suggests that excellent, we've got the right solution, this is what we need to do going forward. The second sentence, this will work for now, suggests that, okay, 1:34 this is a good idea, it's a good solution for this moment. 1:39 It's okay at this moment, but we may need to change it. 1:44 What I really love about this combination of for now is that it acts like a shortcut in English. 1:53 It carries a lot of meaning instantly without long detailed explanations. For example, I could be chatting with a coworker before a meeting officially starts, 2:04 and in that moment I might say, I'm staying at my sister's because our basement flooded. 2:09 We have to redo all the plumbing, and we're still waiting to find out how long these repairs are going to take. 2:15 Or I could simply say, I'm staying at my sister's for now. 2:20 Done. 2:20 I don't need to share every detail if I don't want to or if it's unnecessary or inappropriate. 2:28 And that brings me to one more thing that makes this word combination so powerful. These words for now set boundaries, 2:38 socially recognized boundaries. They suggest that yes, there are reasons for a situation to be temporary, but those reasons don't need to be discussed. 2:49 Or maybe I don't want to discuss them or maybe they shouldn't be discussed. 2:55 For example, in a professional situation, you probably. 2:59 Wouldn't say this to a customer. You wouldn't say, we're not taking on new projects right now because our main developer quit last 3:08 week, and now we're interviewing new clients and trying to replace that person. 3:13 Instead, it would be more appropriate to say, we're not taking on new clients at this time. 3:19 Those words at this time are similar to for now, but they carry a more formal or professional tone. So as I said, 3:29 I want to help you use the words for now correctly along with similar phrases we'll look at for the time being at this time and one or two others. 3:40 My goal for you is to explain complicated situations in English clearly and naturally and without overexplaining. 3:49 Now, because we're talking about how to emphasize something that is temporary, I know you might be asking why do we need this in English? 3:59 We already have the present continuous tense, as in, I'm working in Lisbon this year, or I'm staying with my friend while my apartment is being repaired. 4:10 I'm taking a break from social media this month, and each of those examples, the present continuous, is doing its job. 4:18 It tells us that this situation is happening right now and it's not permanent. So why do we need for now? 4:26 The answer is for now is more flexible. 4:29 It emphasizes that change is coming and it can be added to many different kinds of sentences. You can use it with a simple fact, 4:39 I work at a restaurant for now. You can use it with a future decision. 4:44 I'll keep my old phone for now. You can use it with a decision already made. 4:49 For example, we've decided to wait for now and you can use it for permission. 4:56 You can use my office for now. And lastly, you can use it with a simple statement about what is possible. 5:04 That option is available for now in all of these examples, for now adds the same important idea that something is true at this 5:14 point in time, but it may change later. 5:18 And this matters because not every temporary situation fits neatly inside the present continuous framework. 5:27 Sometimes you're talking about a fact, a decision, a presence, a rule, a permission or a solution. And in those moments, 5:36 the words for now help you add temporary meaning without changing the whole sentence. Before we keep going, I wanna ask, 5:45 does it feel like you already know enough English to survive everyday conversations? 5:53 But surviving isn't what you want. You want to share. 5:57 Your real thoughts, tell stories, ask better questions, and feel like yourself in English. You wanna connect to other people. 6:05 That is exactly what the Confident Women Community is for. 6:09 If your goal is to be more fluent, more confident in English, and you know that what you need is speaking Practice plus support. 6:17 To help you get there, I would love for you to check out and join us inside the Confident Women Community. 6:23 I'll share a link where you can get all the details and the notes below. 6:26 Now that we have a better understanding of why the words for now are so helpful and how we can use them, I want to look at some similar phrases including for the time being, 6:37 for the moment, and at this time. 6:40 That first one for the time being is super similar to the words for now, it means for a limited period, 6:49 and although English speakers often used for now and for the time being interchangeably, there is a difference in tone. For now is short, flexible, and conversational. 7:01 While for the time being sounds just a little bit more careful or deliberate, it often suggests that a temporary arrangement has been 7:11 chosen and will continue until something else changes. 7:16 For example, for the time being, we'll continue with the current plan or we can use the guest room as an office for the time being. 7:26 This phrase is especially useful when you don't know exactly how long the temporary situation will last. Next, 7:36 let's look at a similar phrase with a slightly different feeling for the moment. 7:41 This means that something is true or useful right now, but it may change later. It is close to that meaning of for now, 7:49 but it often sounds more thoughtful or careful. For example, for the moment, I'm happy in this position. Now, 7:58 in saying that it doesn't mean that you're gonna stay in this job or in this position forever. It means that this is how you feel about it right now. 8:07 Here's another example. For the moment, let's keep the schedule as is, or for the moment, this solution is enough. 8:17 In each example we're saying that the current situation works at this moment, but you're leaving room. 8:25 You're creating future opportunities for a different or a better situation later. 8:31 So if the words for now feel like the most natural phrase for everyday speech for the moment can feel a little more reflective like something you're thinking through. 8:44 So you might use for the moment when you want to say that this is true right now and I'm not making any bigger or more permanent decisions yet. 8:55 Decision yet. 8:56 And now let's move on to the phrase that we most often use in professional situations at this time, this is more formal and professional and it means currently or at 9:07 the present time, but again, it may not be permanent. 9:10 You'll often hear this phrase used in customer service, business, emails, company updates, or professional conversations. 9:20 For example, going back to what we shared earlier, we are not taking on new clients at this time, or we're unable to offer a refund at this time, 9:30 or this isn't something we provide at this time. 9:34 In each case, those words at this time help to communicate the current limitation. 9:41 It tells your listener what is true right now without giving unnecessary details. And that really matters In professional situations. 9:52 You might know all the background details behind the limitation. 9:57 Maybe your team is short staffed, maybe a policy is changing, maybe there's a problem behind the scenes, but your customer or client or the public doesn't always need 10:10 that full explanation. So instead of saying too much, you can just say, we're unable to offer this at this time. Now, one thing I want to add here, 10:20 when we add the words at this time, it doesn't promise that something will change later. It could, but there's no guarantee. And again, 10:31 that's why it's so useful for professional boundaries, limitations, or careful responses. Now that we have this in place, 10:39 now that we understand the meaning behind for now, for the time being, for the moment, and at this time I want to make this more practical, 10:48 how do you choose the right phrase in the moment when it comes to making that decision? The good news is they all overlap, 10:56 so you don't need to treat them like there's super strict rules. 11:01 Instead, it may be better to think about the situation that you're in and the tone that you want to use. If, for example, you want the most natural, 11:11 the most flexible, the most casual for everyday conversation, that's when to use. For now I live in Madrid for now, this works for now. 11:21 We've decided to wait for now. 11:23 Then if you want something a little more careful or deliberate use for the time being, for the time being all, 11:33 continue with the current plan or I'm staying here for the time being. 11:38 If you want something that suggests you're being thoughtful and reflective, thinking through a current situation and especially handling 11:47 a current feeling, decision or solution, that's when to use for the moment. 11:54 For the moment, I'm happy in this position for the moment, let's keep the schedule as is. And again, if you're looking for something more formal or more professional, 12:05 especially when you need to communicate a limitation, that's when to use at this time. For example, we're not taking on any new clients at this time, 12:16 or this isn't something we provide at this time. 12:20 What I recommend is that rather than trying to memorize some strict black and white rule, I want you to remember the general feeling for now is 12:31 every day very flexible, very casual for the time being is a little more careful. 12:38 And it often describes a temporary arrangement for the moment is thoughtful and reflective. It talks about what is currently true, 12:48 and then at this time is professional and formal. In the end, all of them help you do the same important thing. 12:56 They help you explain what is true right now without giving complicated details or making something sound permanent. 13:05 So now I wanna bring this back to where we started. 13:08 Those two little words for now can help you explain the complicated without complicated details. So here's your practice for today. 13:18 I want you to think about one thing in your life that is true right now, but might change later. Maybe it's where you live. 13:27 Maybe it's something about your work situation. Maybe it's a routine, a decision, or a temporary solution. Once you've got that idea in place, 13:36 I want you to try finishing one of these sentences for the time being. 13:41 I'm for the moment. I'm, 13:46 this works for now because, and lastly, we're not at this time, the best way to get started is to choose one today. 13:57 Write it down and notice what that phrase helps you do. 14:02 You're not explaining every single detail. 14:05 You're not saying this will be true forever. You're simply saying, this is the situation right now, and that's the power of these small phrases. 14:13 They help you to be clear, natural, and precise, even when the situation itself is kind of complicated and difficult to explain. As always, if you found today's lesson helpful, 14:26 don't forget to subscribe or follow wherever you're listening or watching from today. Thank you so much for joining me, and I look forward to next time.
