12. 1:08and timber, wood that is used in building.
13. 1:13Sandberg wrote three stories about how the letter X got into the alphabet.
14. 1:22Today we present two of them.
15. 1:25Here is Mario Ritter Jr.
16. 1:28with the stories Pig Wisps and Kiss Me by Carl Sandberg.
17. 1:34There
18. 1:43was an oyster king far in the south who knew how to open oysters and pick out the pearls.
19. 1:52He grew rich, and all kinds of money came rolling in on him because he was a great oyster opener
20. 1:59and knew how to pick out the pearls.
21. 2:03The son of this oyster king was named Shovelears, ears.
22. 2:09And it was hard for him to remember.
23. 2:13He knows how to open oysters, but he forgets to pick out the pearls, said the father of shovel-ears.
24. 2:22He is learning to remember worse and worse, and to forget better and better, said the father of shovel-ears.
25. 2:31Now in that same place was a little girl with two braids of hair twisted down her back,
26. 2:39making a playful face and saying, Here we come, where from?
27. 2:44And her mother called her Pig Wisps.
28. 2:49Twice a week, Pig Wisps ran to the butcher shop for a soup-bone.
29. 2:56Before starting, she crossed her fingers, and then the whole way to the butcher shop kept her fingers crossed.
30. 3:05If she saw playmates who asked her to a game like Crosstag, or Jackstones,
31. 3:13or all around the mulberry bush, she told them, My fingers are crossed,
32. 3:19and I am running to the butcher shop for a soup-bone.
33. 3:25One morning, running to the butcher shop, she bumped into a big, strange boy and knocked him flat on the sidewalk.
34. 3:35Did you look where you were running?
35. 3:37she asked him.
36. 3:39I forgot again, said Cheveliers.
37. 3:43I remember worse and worse, I forget better and better.
38. 3:48Cross your fingers like this, said Pigwhisps, showing him how.
39. 3:54He ran to the butcher shop with her,
40. 3:57watching her keep her fingers crossed until the butcher gave her the soup bone.
41. 4:04After I get it, then the soup bone reminds me to go home with it, she told him.
42. 4:11But until I get the soup bone, I keep my fingers crossed.
43. 4:18Shoveliers went to his father and began helping his father open oysters.
44. 4:25Shoveliers kept his fingers crossed to make him remember to pick out the pearls.
45. 4:32He picked a hundred buckets of pearls the first day and brought his father the longest slippery shiny rope
46. 4:40of pearls ever seen in that oyster country.
47. 4:45"'How do you do it?'
48. 4:46his father asked.
49. 4:49"'It is the crossed fingers like this,' said Cheveliers, crossing his fingers like the letter X.
50. 4:58"'This is the way to remember better and forget worse.'
51. 5:04It was then the oyster king went and told the people who changed the alphabets just what happened.
52. 5:14When the people who changed the alphabets heard,
53. 5:18they decided to put in a new letter, the letter X, near the end of the alphabet,
54. 5:25the sign of the crossed fingers.
55. 5:29On the day pig-whisps and shovel-ears were to marry,
56. 5:35the people who changed the alphabets all came to the ceremony with their fingers crossed.
57. 5:43Pig-whisps and shovel-ears stood up at the ceremony.
58. 5:47They crossed their fingers.
59. 5:50They told each other they would remember their promises.
60. 5:55And Pig-whisps had two ropes of pearls twisted down her back,
61. 6:01making a playful full face and saying, Here we come, where from?
62. 6:20Many years ago, when pigs climbed chimneys and chased cats up into trees,
63. 6:28there was a lumber king who lived in a river city with many wild cats in the timber nearby.
64. 6:38I am losing my hair and my teeth, and I am tired of many things.
65. 6:44My only joy is a daughter who is a dancing shaft of light on the axe-handles of morning.
66. 6:53She was quick and wild the lumber-king's daughter.
67. 6:57She had never kissed.
68. 7:00Not her mother, nor father, nor any sweetheart ever.
69. 7:05Proud she was.
70. 7:07They called her Kiss Me.
71. 7:10She did not like that name Kiss Me.
72. 7:14They never called her that when she was listening.
73. 7:18If she happened to be listening, they called her Find Me, Lose Me, Get Me.
74. 7:26They never spoke of kisses because they knew you, she would run away.
75. 7:31But when she was not listening, they asked, Where is Kiss Me to-day?
76. 7:37or they would say, Every morning Kiss Me gets more beautiful.
77. 7:42I wonder if she will ever get a kiss from a man good enough to kiss her.
78. 7:49One day Kiss Me was lost.
79. 7:52She went out on a horse, with a gun, to hunt wild cats in the forest.
80. 7:59She was gone all day.
81. 8:01All night she was out in a snowstorm with a horse and a gun hunting wild cats.
82. 8:08The blowing snow was worse on the second day.
83. 8:14It was then the lumber-king called in a long loose young man with a leather face and hay in his hair.
84. 8:23there. The king said, Flax eyes,
85. 8:27You are the laziest, most careless man in the river lumber country.
86. 8:33Go out in the snowstorm now among the wild cats where Kissme is fighting for her life and save her.
87. 8:41I am the hero.
88. 8:43I am the man who knows how.
89. 8:46I am the man who has been waiting for this chance, said Flax eyes.
90. 8:50On a horse with a gun out into the snowstorm Flaxeyes rode that day.
91. 8:58Far away he rode to where Kissmee, the quick wild Kissmee,
92. 9:03was standing with her back against a big rock fighting off the wild cats.
93. 9:09In that country the snowstorms make the wild cats wilder,
94. 9:15and Kissmee was tired of shooting wild cats, tired of fighting in the snow,
95. 9:21and almost ready to let the wild cats have her.
96. 9:25Then flax eyes came.
97. 9:28The wild cats jumped at him, and he threw them off.
98. 9:33More wild cats came, jumping straight at his face.
99. 9:38He took hold of those wild cats by the necks,
100. 9:41and threw them over the big rock, up into the trees, away into the snow and the wind.
101. 9:50At last he took all the wildcats one by one and threw them so far they could not return.
102. 9:58He put Kiss Me on her horse, rode back to the lumber-king,
103. 10:03and said, lazy and careless, This is us.
104. 10:08The lumber-king saw the face of flax-eyes was all covered with cross-marks, like the letter X.
105. 10:17And the lumber-king saw the wild-cats had torn the shirt off flax-eyes,
106. 10:23and on the skin of his chest, shoulders, arms, were the cross-marks of the wild-cats' claws,
107. 10:32crossmarks like the letter X.
108. 10:36So the king went to the people who changed the alphabets,
109. 10:41and they put the crossmarks of the wild cat's claws, the letter X, near the end of the alphabet.
110. 10:51At the wedding of Kiss Me and Flax's eyes,
111. 10:54the people who changed the alphabets came with wildcat claws crossed just like the letter X.
