0:00 This 0:07 week, on our National Parks Journey, 0:12 we leave the United States mainland and travel down to the Caribbean. 0:20 There, you will find three islands that make up the United States Virgin Islands, 0:30 St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. 0:37 The Virgin Islands National Park is a tropical paradise on the island of St. John. 0:46 The park covers more than half of the small island. 0:51 It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north 0:57 and the Caribbean Sea to the south. 1:03 The climate here is warm all year. 1:08 Tall green peaks rise from the ocean, which is filled with wildlife. 1:15 The island's white sand beaches 1:20 and clear blue seas are considered to be among the most beautiful 1:28 in the Caribbean. 1:32 Evidence of human history on the island dates back thousands of years. 1:38 Archaeological evidence shows the first people to arrive 1:45 on the Caribbean Islands came 1:48 in canoes from South America more than 2 ,750 years ago. 1:57 The Taino people lived along the shores of St. John Island. 2:03 Over the years, the population of the Taino natives grew. 2:10 You can see evidence of the Taino culture in the petroglyphs within the Virgin Islands National Park. 2:20 Christopher Columbus first saw the island in 1493. 2:26 Later, Spain, 2:29 Holland, England, and Denmark all tried to claim the Virgin Islands as their territory. 2:39 These nations sought to profit from the production of two main crops, 2:47 cotton and sugar. 2:48 The crops were grown on large farms, called plantations, 2:56 that once covered the island. 3:00 African slaves and indentured servants were forced to travel on ships in terrible conditions 3:08 to live and work on the plantations. 3:12 In 1733, the slaves revolted. 3:19 During the revolt, almost one quarter of the island's population was killed. 3:27 Plantations were destroyed. 3:30 In 1762, 3:33 after many struggles, 3:36 Denmark took control of the Virgin Islands. 3:42 Slavery in the Danish-controlled Caribbean islands ended in 1848. 3:51 After that, St. John's crop production and its population greatly declined. 3:59 In 1917, 4:04 the United States bought the islands of St. John, St. Croix, and St. Thomas from Denmark. 4:14 By the 1930s, news of these beautiful American islands spread 4:21 to the mainland United States. 4:24 It marked the beginning of what is now a profitable tourist industry. 4:33 And in 1956, 4:36 land on St. John Island formed America's 29th National Park. 4:45 Lawrence Rockefeller was an American millionaire, 4:50 businessman, conservationist, and philanthropist. 4:56 He visited St. John in the 1950s. 5:00 He quickly fell in love with the island's clean, pure beauty. 5:08 He purchased a small resort there, Canial Bay. 5:12 He also purchased more than 2 ,000 hectares of the island and donated it 5:20 to the government. 5:22 That donation created the U.S. 5:26 Virgin Islands National Park. 5:29 It was officially opened as a national park on December 1, 1956. 5:37 Along with land, the Virgin Islands National Park today protects 5:45 almost 3 ,000 hectares of coral reefs, marine life, and shore land. 5:54 In 1978, much of the nearby Hassell Island was also donated 6:02 to the Virgin Islands National Park. 6:05 The only way to reach the park is by boat. 6:11 Some people arrive on their own sailboats. 6:16 Others come in on large cruise ships. 6:21 Visitors also arrive on water taxis from the island of St. Thomas. 6:28 St. John offers many kinds of places to stay. 6:33 Very large or very small hotels, villas, 6:39 or campgrounds with wood-framed tents. 6:44 At Cinnamon Bay, visitors can rent an empty camp space and set up their own tent. 6:52 It is an affordable and adventurous way to stay in the park. 6:59 From the tropical hills to the blue waters, 7:06 there are many things to do at the Virgin Islands National Park. 7:13 Visitors enjoy fishing, camping, 7:17 sailing, scuba diving, 7:20 snorkeling, and bird watching. 7:25 There are many hiking paths to take. 7:28 Some of the walking paths lead visitors to historical ruins. 7:36 These ruins help explain the park's cultural history. 7:43 The Peace Hill Trail, for example, is a short walk up a rocky and sharp hill. 7:52 It leads to the Peace Hill Windmill Ruin. 7:59 People built the windmill centuries ago. 8:04 The windmills made energy for sugar production. 8:10 The Cinnamon Bay Trail goes through a forest 8:14 and leads to the ruins of the Cinnamon Bay Sugar Plantation. 8:22 Along the way, hikers smell the scents of mango, 8:28 kapok, and apple trees. 8:32 Some of the oldest and tallest trees in the park are found along the Reef Bay Trail. 8:39 Hikers also pass Danish sugar plantation ruins, stone walls, 8:49 and ancient rock carvings, or petroglyphs, from the Taino people. 8:55 Along the way, there is also a huge waterfall, 9:02 fresh water pools, 9:05 and animals such as deer, bats, 9:10 and land crabs. 9:13 Some of the hiking trails end at a beach where you can swim, 9:20 snorkel, or dive. 9:22 Of all the park's beaches, 9:26 Trunk Bay Beach is said to be the most striking. 9:33 Below the clear blue water is a 200 -meter snorkeling path. 9:40 Signs beneath the water describe the turtle, coral, 9:46 and exotic fish species found here. 9:50 Hawk's Nest Beach is also a popular place for snorkeling. 9:58 Near the shore are three small reefs of elk horn coral. 10:05 The elk horn coral gets its name from its shape. 10:11 The reef looks similar to the huge horns of an animal called an elk. 10:19 It is a very rare kind of reef. 10:24 Scientists say it is in danger of becoming extinct. 10:30 The Virgin Islands National Park is often called America's Paradise. 10:38 It protects St. John's pristine nature and preserves the record 10:45 of human history in the Caribbean. 10:49 I'm Katie Weaver. 10:51 And I'm Ashley Thompson.
