11. 0:56It can mean the same thing as the word country.
12. 1:00The word nation can also mean the same thing as one of the meanings of the noun nationality.
13. 1:09The online Oxford Learners Dictionary defines this meaning as follows.
14. 1:16A group of people with the same language, culture, and history.
15. 1:23For example, the Basques are a nationality who live in the country of Spain.
16. 1:31They have their own Basque language and culture.
17. 1:36So, we could say that the Basques are a nation within a nation,
18. 1:43because they live within the country of Spain.
19. 1:49To make it clearer, whether we are discussing a country or a nationality,
20. 1:56we can use the word nation state.
21. 1:59A nation-state means the same thing as country.
22. 2:05In political science, the word state by itself usually means the same thing as country.
23. 2:14However, in several countries, the term state is used for different divisions within a country.
24. 2:23history. For example, within the United States, there are 50 states.
25. 2:32Each of these states has its own state government and state laws, which are different from federal laws.
