3. 0:22It was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
4. 0:26We will tell the story in two parts.
5. 0:29Here is K.
6. 0:29Galant with the first part of our story.
7. 0:47Many years ago, a young man named Giovanni Guascunti left his home in Naples
8. 0:54to study northern Italy.
9. 0:58He rented a small room on the top floor of a dark and ancient palace.
10. 1:05Long ago the building had belonged to a noble family.
11. 1:11Now an old woman, Signora Lisa Betta, rented its rooms to students at the University of Pajoa.
12. 1:21Giovanni's room had a small window.
13. 1:25From it, he could see a large garden that had many plants and flowers.
14. 1:32"'Does the garden belong to you?'
15. 1:35he asked Signora Lizzabetta one day.
16. 1:39"'Oh, no,' she said quickly.
17. 1:42That garden belongs to the famous doctor,
18. 1:47Giacomo Rappaccini.
19. 1:49People say he uses those plants to make strange kinds of medicine.
20. 1:55He lives in that small brown house in the garden, with his daughter Beatrice.
21. 2:03Giovanni often sat by his window to look at the garden.
22. 2:06He had never seen so many different kinds of plants.
23. 2:10They all had enormous green leaves and magnificent flowers in every color of the rainbow.
24. 2:19Giovanni's favorite plant was in a white marble vase near the house.
25. 2:26It was covered with big purple flowers.
26. 2:30One day, while Giovanni was looking out his window,
27. 2:35he saw an old man in a black cape walking in the garden.
28. 2:40The old man was tall and thin.
29. 2:44His face was an unhealthy yellow color.
30. 2:49His black eyes were very cold.
31. 2:53The old man wore thick gloves on his hands and a mask over his mouth and nose.
32. 3:02He walked carefully among the plants, as if he were walking among wild animals or poisonous snakes.
33. 3:12Although he looked at the flowers very closely,
34. 3:16he did not touch or smell any of them.
35. 3:21When the old man arrived at the plant with the big purple flowers, he stopped.
36. 3:28But he took off his mask and called loudly,
37. 3:33Beatrice, come help me.
38. 3:37I am coming, Father.
39. 3:40What do you want?
40. 3:42answered a warm young voice from inside the house.
41. 3:47A young woman came into the garden.
42. 3:50Her thick dark hair fell around her shoulders and curls.
43. 3:54her cheeks were pink and her eyes were large and black.
44. 4:00She seemed full of life, health, and energy as she walked among the plants.
45. 4:08Giovanni thought she was as beautiful as the purple flowers in the marble vase.
46. 4:13The old man said something to her.
47. 4:18She nodded her head as she touched and smelled the flowers that her father had been so careful to avoid.
48. 4:29Several weeks later, Giovanni went to visit Pietro Ballione, a friend of his father's.
49. 4:36Professor Ballione taught medicine at the university.
50. 4:41During the visit, Giovanni asked about Dr. Rappaccini.
51. 4:46"'He is a great scientist,' Professor Ballione replied, "'but he is also a dangerous man.'
52. 4:55"'Why?'
53. 4:57asked Giovanni. The older man shook his head slowly.
54. 5:02"'Because Rappaccini cares more about science than he does about people.
55. 5:09He has created many terrible poisons from the plants in his garden.
56. 5:16He thinks he can cure sickness with these poisons.
57. 5:21It is true that several times he has cured a very sick person that everyone thought would die.
58. 5:30But Rappuccini's medicine has also killed many people.
59. 5:36I think he would sacrifice any life, even his own, for one of his experiments."
60. 5:45But what about his daughter, Giovanni said?
61. 5:50I'm sure he loves her.
62. 5:53The old professor smiled at the young man.
63. 5:57So, he said, you have heard about Beatrice Rappaccini.
64. 6:02People say she is very beautiful,
65. 6:06but few men in Pajoa have ever seen her.
66. 6:10She never leaves her father's garden.
67. 6:15Giovanni left Professor Balloni's house as the sun was setting.
68. 6:21On his way home, he stopped at a flower shop where he bought some fresh flowers.
69. 6:27He returned to his room and and sat by the window.
70. 6:32Very little sunlight was left.
71. 6:35The garden was quiet.
72. 6:38The purple flowers on Giovanni's favorite plant seemed to glow in the evening's fading light.
73. 6:46Then, someone came out of the doorway of the little brown house.
74. 6:53It was Beatrice.
75. 6:56She entered the garden and walked among the plants.
76. 7:01She bent to touch the leaves of a plant or to smell a flower.
77. 7:07Rappaccini's daughter seemed to grow more beautiful with each step.
78. 7:14When she reached the purple plant, she buried her face in its flowers.
79. 7:19Giovanni heard her say, Say, give me your breath, my sister, the ordinary air makes me weak,
80. 7:27and give me one of your beautiful flowers."
81. 7:31Beatrice gently broke off one of the largest flowers.
82. 7:36As she lifted it, to put it in her dark hair,
83. 7:40a few drops of liquid from the flower fell to the ground.
84. 7:46One of the drops landed on the head of a tiny lizard crawling near the feet of Beatrice.
85. 7:55For a moment the small animal twisted violently.
86. 8:00Then it moved no more.
87. 8:04Beatrice did not seem surprised.
88. 8:08She sighed and placed the flower in her hair.
89. 8:14Giovanni leaned out of the window so he'd see her better.
90. 8:18At this moment a beautiful butterfly flew over the garden wall.
91. 8:25It seemed to be attracted by Beatrice and flew once around her head.
92. 8:31Then the insect's bright wings stopped and it fell to the ground dead.
93. 8:39Beatrice shook her head sadly.
94. 8:45Suddenly she looked up at Giovanni's window.
95. 8:49She saw the young man looking at her.
96. 8:53Giovanni picked up the flowers he had bought and threw them down to her.
97. 8:59Young lady, he said, wear these flowers as a gift from Giovanni Gasconti.
98. 9:08Thank you," Beatrice answered.
99. 9:12She picked up the flowers from the ground and quickly ran to the house.
100. 9:18She stopped at the door for a moment to wave shyly at Giovanni.
101. 9:24It seemed to him that his flowers were beginning to turn brown in her hands.
102. 9:31For many days the young man stayed away from the window that looked out in Rappaccini's garden.
103. 9:40He wished he had not talked to Beatrice because now he felt under the power of her beauty.
104. 9:48He was a little afraid of her, too.
105. 9:51He could not forget how the little lizard and the butterfly had died.
106. 9:58One day, while he was returning home from his classes, he met Professor Ballione on the street.
107. 10:06"'Well, Giovanni,' the old man said, "'Have you forgotten me?'"
108. 10:12Then he looked closely at the young man.
109. 10:16"'What is wrong, my friend?
110. 10:19Your appearance has changed since the last time we met.'
111. 10:25It was true.
112. 10:26Giovanni had become very thin.
113. 10:30His face was white, and his eyes seemed to burn with fever.
114. 10:37As they stood talking, a man dressed in a long black cape came down the street.
115. 10:44He moved slowly like a person in poor health.
116. 10:49His face was yellow,
117. 10:51but his eyes were sharp and black.
118. 10:55it was the man Giovanni had seen in the garden.
119. 11:01As he passed them, the old man nodded coldly to Professor Ballone,
120. 11:07but he looked at Giovanni with a great deal of interest.
121. 11:13It's Dr. Rappaccini,
122. 11:16Professor Ballone whispered after the old man had past them.
123. 11:22Has he ever seen your face before?"
124. 11:26Giovanni shook his head.
125. 11:28"'No,' he answered.
126. 11:29"'I don't think so.'"
127. 11:33Professor Ballione looked worried.
128. 11:36"'I think he has seen you before.
129. 11:39I know that cold look of his.
130. 11:42He looks the same way when he examines an animal he has killed in one of his experiments.
131. 11:51Jirvani, I will bet my life on it.
132. 11:54You are the subject of one of Rappuccini's experiments."
133. 12:01Jirvani stepped away from the old man.
134. 12:04"'You are joking,' he said.
135. 12:08"'No. I am serious.'"
136. 12:10The professor took Giovanni's arm.
137. 12:14Be careful, my young friend.
138. 12:17You are in great danger.
139. 12:21Giovanni pulled his arm away.
140. 12:24I must be going, he said.
141. 12:27Good night. As Giovanni hurried to his room, he felt confused and a little frightened.
142. 12:37Signora Lisobretta was waiting for him outside his door.
143. 12:41She knew he was interested in Beatrice.
144. 12:46I have good news for you, she said.
145. 12:49I know where there is a secret entrance into Rappuccini's garden.
146. 12:57Giovanni could not believe his ears.
147. 13:01Where is it?
148. 13:03he asked. Show me the way.
